The Arc de Triomphe in Bucharest was raised in 1922 to commemorate the Romanian soldiers fallen during World War I. The original Arc was made of wood but replaced by the present structure designed by Petru Antonescu in 1935. Standing 25m high, the Arc has a staircase that allows visitors to climb to the terrace on top of the monument, though only on special occasions: the National Day – December 1st and Veterans Day – June 9th.
The sculptures and reliefs that decorate the monument were created by the leading artists of the day. At the moment the Arc is under renovation.
