St. Elefterie Church was designed by the architect Constantin Iotzu, to replce an older church, by the same name nearby, erected in the 1740s. It was named after the Saint Eleftherios.  
The new church is 36 meter height, it is one of the largest churches in the Romanian capital. The church marks the entrance to one of the most picturesque neighborhoods of Bucharest.
